It's Register Office, not Registry Office

I don't know why this bugs me, but it does. The Register Office is where the registry (of births, marriages and deaths) is kept. I know practically everyone says 'Registry Office', and so it falls under common usage, but it's wrong, and it annoys me.

I feel better for getting that out. Thank you.

That's interesting. Thank you for putting us straight. I genuinely thought it was the other way round, i.e. The Registry Office where the 'register' of births, deaths and marriages is kept. I'm happy to be corrected!

You're correct for the UK, although interestingly in NZ and Australia it's definitely Registry Office.

Even more interesting. My mother was Australian, so maybe that's why I believed it was Registry Office. My mother was always right.:)
