The Smith's or The Smiths???

Sorry not the band!
I am a wannabe pedant but having a crisis over apostrophes. Am ordering a house sign for my friend, she wants it to say her family's name on. So, should it be The Smith's? I think so because it's their house. But have been half convinced by DH that it shouldn't have the apostrophe.
Please advise oh wise pedants!

The Smiths. No apostrophe.

HeartburnCentral · 24/07/2017 21:41

Leave out the s. Smith

StiffyByng · 24/07/2017 21:42

The Smiths. It's the plural of their name so no apostrophe. Or The Smiths' house. Not The Smith's.

HeartburnCentral · 24/07/2017 21:42

You are right about apostrophe signifying property but no s for a family name sign imo

InigoTaran · 24/07/2017 21:43

If their name is Smith, it would he the Smiths', as plural but belonging to them.

Oh bloody hell I'll never live this down!

I'd put The Smith's as in Smith's house but without putting 'house' .

If I were visiting them I'd say 'I'm going to the Smith's.

PrettyLittleBrownEyedMe · 24/07/2017 21:51

It depends what you want the sign to mean! "The Smiths" (no apostrophe) is announcing 'we are the Smiths' (referring to the people). "The Smiths' " means 'this is the Smiths' house. In neither case would it be the Smith's!! Unless of course it actually does belong to the smith, in which you'd be better off calling it The Forge Grin

TweeBee · 24/07/2017 21:57

Yes, sorry, I do know it would be Smiths'. They have a more unusual name and I didn't want to put it on here just in case but was still thinking of it!
