Pedants' corner

Is the adverb dying a death?

Seriously this bothers me far more than is healthy.

It really seems to be more and more of a thing.

Example: "Yeah babe you did amazing".

Noooooo amazingly argh.

And it's becoming, in RL, The Norm.

I know there is a protection movement, ostensibly, for the apostrophe. I think now it's time for protection of the adverb. Those poor neglected adverbs. They're endangered I tell you!

Do no pedants care? .

In your example the word "amazing" is still being USED as an adverb.

Even if it has lots its LY.

PseudoBadger · 10/06/2017 11:57

Isn't that better than "you done amazing" Grin

PacificDogwod · 10/06/2017 11:59

At least have 'bigly' now to make up for it Grin

PacificDogwod · 10/06/2017 11:59

At least we have... Blush

An error in Pedants' Corner is so much more embarrassing than anywhere else...

Trills · 10/06/2017 12:03

Muphry's Law strikes again :o

AWendyAteMyFitbit · 10/06/2017 12:04

Thank you pedants ;)

Yes that wasn't the best example.

Wonderflonium · 10/06/2017 12:05

it's really really not Wink

PacificDogwod · 10/06/2017 12:06
Grin

I also cannot stand 'I am sat here' - no, NO! 'I am sitting here'.

Humph.

AWendyAteMyFitbit · 10/06/2017 12:20

Grin. I think pedants' corner, by definition, is far scarier than AIBU.

But glad I'm not alone with my adverb pain, or lack of rather .

No, you're not alone.

One of the things which winds me up is all the people who 'eat healthy'

Arrggh

sodablackcurrant · 10/06/2017 19:37

Pacific,

That is my pet hate aswell, along with "I was stood there". I just don't get it, but it may be a regional thing. Fine if so.

Optimist1 · 10/06/2017 20:18

Well, when our Prime Minister says in an interview "I have to confess that me and my friends ..." and no-one except me appears to get irritated by it, it's a sure sign that the country will be going to the dogs unless we pedants rise up and take action!

Witness her shameful grammar here

Lapinlapin · 10/06/2017 20:37

Yes Optimist that struck me.

What action shall we take? Not sure that 'The Pedant's Party' will attract many votes!

StealthPolarBear · 10/06/2017 20:39

What about eating clean

StealthPolarBear · 10/06/2017 20:39

Makes me think of licking the plate

Itsuglyhead · 10/06/2017 20:50

"Drive safe" or "drive careful" usually bellowed halfway down the street to someone, drives me up the wall Grin

beepbeepimasheep · 10/06/2017 21:01

No. I'm sat in class to teach about adverbs each day.

KatherinaMinola · 10/06/2017 21:06

Optimist, I noticed that too, and it shocked me more than the actual content (running through the fields of wheat). I cannot bear this - she was so obviously doing it to be down with the kids too (or to sound more like she thinks ordinary people sound, or something). Nobody thinks she really talks like this.

Trills · 10/06/2017 21:28

"Eating clean" annoys me for reasons far beyond grammar.
