NICHE - pronounced Nitch, Neesh, or Nish?

I would always pronounce it "neesh", as it's a French word.

I just read that Merriam-Webster lists the other pronunciations as also being correct. I believe that the US prefers "nitch", whilst the UK is more likely to pronounce it "neesh".

Which one do you use?

Neesh

Hassled · 28/07/2016 14:02

Neesh. Wouldn't have occurred to me there are other pronunciations - but then I thought that about the word almond.

SenecaFalls · 28/07/2016 14:46

I say "neesh" and I'm American.

tribpot · 28/07/2016 14:47

Neesh. See also: clique. This word is NOT pronounced 'click'.

Definitely 'neesh'.

I usually say 'cleek' but do occasionally say 'click' if I'm being dergatory.

cheekyfunkymonkey · 28/07/2016 14:54

Thank goodness. I was worried for a second but common sense prevails

DramaAlpaca · 28/07/2016 14:56

I am guilty of saying click, think it's because of all the American high school films I watched growing up.

Neesh

Cleek

HopperBusTicket · 28/07/2016 15:34

On this subject I worked with a man who pronounced calibre as cal-ee-bray. It is cal-ai-ber, isn't it?!

headinhands · 28/07/2016 15:37

The only times I heard it spoken it was 'neech'. (Only twice, don't move in those circles)

WanderingTrolley1 · 28/07/2016 15:38

Calla-bruh.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/07/2016 15:38

Neesh

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/07/2016 15:41

Calibre definitely ends in ber

LyndaNotLinda · 28/07/2016 15:48

Neesh, cleek, kali-bur

Click and nitch fill me with rage

ArgyMargy · 28/07/2016 15:57

Call-EE-bray would be a Spanish-style pronunciation. It's definitely not call-EYE-ber (we say that as a joke in my family). Calliber with emphasis on the first syllable is most common. And neesh for me - but Americans have always pronounced French words in their own way so nitch is fine if you're American. Maybe nitch is more West Coast?
