I don't speak French and I only did an A-Level in French many moons ago, so I am not claiming to be an expert here.

However, here are a couple of examples that drive me crazy:-

Fox paws (faux pas)
Percy or per say (per se)

SenecaFalls Thanks for the video. Weird that the man says "La" instead of "Le" before Creuset. I think he is English?

We live in Spain where there is a very popular holiday destination (at least among people we know) called Benicàssim. It's pronounced Benny- CASS-eem with the stress on the third syllable. It's mentioned frequently on tv and there's also a big music festival there that is often mentioned on tv as well as in conversation. Yet a couple of our friends insist on calling it Benny-cass-IM with the stress on the last syllable which for some reason really irritates me. It's a word that pops up frequently yet now I try to avoid any conversation where this place could be mentioned as I get irrationally annoyed to hear it mispronounced by these two particular friends.

It's: je n'adore pas le nom? (You were right). Hahaha re: La Roux / La Rue. The latter is grammatically correct. Wink

LockedOutOfMN · 02/08/2016 21:45

It's not France-swaz Hollande, it's France-swah - it doesn't elide because the former sounds like the feminine version of the name (Françoise).

Roystonv · 03/08/2016 08:33

Sorry but fox paws is wonderful, wrong but wonderful - we use words incorrectly within the family for fun will have to adopt this example.

toadgirl · 03/08/2016 13:08

Yes, fox paws ARE damned cute!

At home, we say silver plates for s'il vous plaît.

Also, mercy buckets instead of merci beaucoup.

Don't really know why!

Nearly every supermarket has pain au chocolat written incorrectly. Pain aux raisins is even worse. Cringe.

pimmsy · 03/08/2016 22:40

Au poil!

I quite often write ect (not in anything formal!) because of Molesworth, not ignorance.

CoteDAzur · 03/08/2016 22:59

"'Francois Hollande' on the news as 'fron-shwa all-ond' instead of 'fron-shwaz-all-ond'."

There is no 'sh' anywhere in Francois Hollande.

CoteDAzur · 03/08/2016 23:08

"Au poil!"

À poil, actually Smile

pimmsy · 03/08/2016 23:23

Le commentaire du poil (pubien) peut être "au poil" sans pour autant que l'auteure soit à poil!
