Do's - why the apostrophe?

This has puzzled me for a while.

I know that adding an apostrophe isn't required when pluralising. So how does 'do's' have one?

I read a full piece in the newspaper earlier about stag do's.

Can someone please explain ?

Thanks.

People just do it. Like potato's. And CD's. I have no idea why.

I have also seen "hen doos".

issynoho · 21/05/2016 19:26

It's wrong, that's what.

FuzzyOwl · 21/05/2016 19:28

Just because you see it written down that way and in a newspaper, doesn't mean they are right. In this case, they aren't.

BlueEyeshadow · 21/05/2016 19:28

People think "dos" looks weird, so they add an apostrophe. Doesn't make it right though.

AgentProvocateur · 21/05/2016 19:30

It's technically wrong, but a lot of style guides deem it acceptable to enhance clarity and readability, particularly in headlines.

Drinksforeveryone · 21/05/2016 19:30

I wondered if I was missing something. If dos was two words joined together or similar.

In that case will compose my email to The Times.

Or perhaps not?

It looks so wrong.

So wrong. 'Dos' looks right to me, I think I've trained my brain to read it correctly because I can't abide the apostrophe misuse.

Scarydinosaurs · 21/05/2016 19:38

Hen/Stag Do's are a stupid invention anyway. I suppose it fits that they should have a stupid name.

dementedpixie · 21/05/2016 19:39

I would say dos as d-aw-s though which is wrong.
