I'm with you, OP. "Would/could/should of" feels endemic. I understand the point being made but it's so distracting and I'm unlikely to take any further pronouncements seriously after such a school boy error.

The very least of John McDonnell's problems is his illiteracy; he also thinks that foment and ferment are synonyms, of course.

On the other hand, it's noticeable that when he comes to paeans of praise for terrorists, his grammar is much more fluent. Perhaps he invests more effort in that.

The errant 'Of' is my pet hate. I mean, it makes no grammatical sense whatsoever. It's no typo, or spelling issue, it's a word with a completely different meaning to the one it replaces.

Well his isn't directly as he isn't in the party in power, but as an elected MP he is in the sense that he will debate and vote for laws etc.

"could of" is unacceptable in edited publications (novels, newspapers etc avoid it), so I'm not going to get too worked up about its appearance in throwaway, conversational situations like texts and tweets. After all, in speech, "could've" and "could of" are pretty indistinguishable, but we don't have any problem understanding meaning.
