penne pasta

Why on earth do so many people call penne 'penne pasta'? Nobody says 'spaghetti pasta', 'tagliatelle pasta' or 'ravioli pasta'?! Not sure why, but I find it mildly irritating.

I don't want to be overly generous about this irritating habit, but "penne" is in real use as a non-food noun, so it could be a warning to people who think they are invited to eat pens.

A bit like "gingerbread men", as opposed to "men".
