It's FOR not FIR

Since joining MN, I've noticed people writing FIR instead of FOR. I've never seen this anywhere else. How on earth has anyone got to adulthood thinking that this is the correct word? I've never even seen children do this in 10 years of teaching. Angry

It's clearly a typo. I and o are next to each other on the keyboard.

Typo?

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 16/01/2016 17:50

I always assumed it was a case of fat fingers, small keyboard?

SoupDragon · 16/01/2016 17:50

Have you noticed how the I and O are next to each other on the keyboard...?

RhinestoneCowgirl · 16/01/2016 17:51

In some broad Scottish accents you could make a case for 'fir'

Otoh... it's probably just a typo

DesertOrDessert · 16/01/2016 17:57

Because I and O are next to each other on a keyboard, and if you type quickly on a small screen, and don't proof read carefully, it's an easy typo to make, nothing to do with meaning to put in fir. (Like I've just corrected out for put, I and P being next to each other, and both words being valid in English)

WMittens · 08/02/2016 09:24

As already said, it's probably a typo most of the time. The rest of the time it's probably autocorrect.

RoseDog · 08/02/2016 09:27

My iPad much prefers fir to for, changes it every bloody time!

RiverTam · 08/02/2016 09:36

It's a typo, my fat fingers do it all the time. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you never use MN on your phone.

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 08/02/2016 09:39

I do it too ... And because fir is a word auto correct doesn't pick it up - it's a forgivable typo

firesidechat · 08/02/2016 09:39

Of course it's a typo, but not one I've seen often enough to comment on.

Not helped by the lack of an edit feature.

firesidechat · 08/02/2016 09:41

Oh and no one got to adulthood thinking this is the correct word. Does that help op?

firesidechat · 08/02/2016 09:42

Awaits this face from op - Blush

It's a typo, I do it all the time.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 09/02/2016 13:29

Its a typo, my phone thinks I mean fir when I try to type for. Obviously.
