More rare?

This appeared in a press release at work. Something had become more rare. Internally I'm twitching that it should be 'rarer' but I am doubting my own judgement as I have a grudge against the PR person who mangled a statement I gave them months ago.
Unbiased opinions please?

Rarer.
Unbiasedly so!

I thinks that more rare could be used, eg "it has become more rare for people to eat in the canteen", as well as rarer.
