Pedants' corner

David Cameron, you are found guilty of a crime against the English language.

On today's news I overheard bloody Cameron, the one with the head made of ham, using 'myself' instead of 'I'. Why has this abuse of the language suddenly become so agreeable that even the PM uses it?

Phew, that feels better.

He dresses like an estate agent so it should be no surprise he sounds like one.

Andrewofgg · 09/08/2015 08:56

A bit harsh on estate agents.

Icimoi · 09/08/2015 10:37

Somehow that seems entirely typical of Cameron. What puzzles me is that we keep being told how bright he is.

windolyn · 18/08/2015 08:03

They use 'myself' in most of the period dramas too. Ann Boleyn famously uses it in her letters, it used to be common currency in formal communication.

I'm not a Cameron fan, I just wonder why people object so much, especially when more 'lowly' types use it.

pigsDOfly · 19/08/2015 20:24

It might have been correct in Ann Boleyn's time but it hasn't been correct usage for a very long time and now sound very wrong.

When I hear someone use it, I'm afraid I do make assumptions about them.

On Estate Agent details.

This property is in a highly sort after lane.

The one that really drives me mad.

Reign in or free reign. You only reign if you happen to be a monarch, it's rein

windolyn · 20/08/2015 23:26

Not just Ann Boleyn, obviously, that was just one famous example of a 'myselfer' and it was commonly used much later than that period. Sometimes written 'my self'

When I hear someone use it, I'm afraid I do make assumptions about them.
As do I when I hear petty, pseudo snobbery and judging.

Shallishanti · 20/08/2015 23:37

really, that is the least of his crimes and I speak as a pedant

jeronimoh · 20/08/2015 23:41

What did he say?

Disclaimer - It gets right on my tits when people use 'I' incorrectly because they think it's 'correct.'
