'Debate with me' would surely have been a better way to word it?
They debate the topics, not each other.
Or am I the only one who thought it sounded a bit odd?

"Debate with me" sounds more natural to my ear, I agree, but I think "debate me" is quite common and is clear to understand. Why is "debate with me" better? After all it uses more words, and many would say omitting needless words is desirable.

I agree OP. It sounded wrong, like he was inviting Cameron to debate aspects of his character or something.

I presume they worded it like that for a reason but it did sound a sour note to me.
