Pedants' corner

Defuse. It's defuse. Not 'diffuse'.

If I wanted to take the heat out of a situation, I'd be 'defusing' it, not 'diffusing' it, which would involve particles or something...I don't actually think I've ever seen 'defuse' on Mumsnet, just the more incorrect 'diffuse'.

I realise this post will remain a lonely whimper in the pedantic darkness, but I feel better for writing it :)

I suppose you might need to defuse an argument between a diffuse group of posters? Except nobody here seems to recognise the diffuse nature of posters in an argument: they tend to prefer to believe they are 'brigades' who agree on purpose Grin

I reckon we're a diffuse bunch on MN, although united in our keenness to defuse any 'ganging-up' before it gets out of hand ;)
