Pedants' corner

Harry on 'Arry!!

I had this colleague who had a child who was allegedly called Harry. However, I seriously began to doubt this seeing as in the five years I knew her, every time she referred to him she called him Arry Angry.

I was always dying to ask innocently what was on his birth certificate but never had the nerve.

Can you tell this is a thread about a thread aitch/haitch?

Are you sure he was called Harry? Could Arry be short for Aristotle?

Friend of a friend taught 'Arry - yes, with an apostrophe.

Don't wish to be pedantic, but, I will be anyway wouldn't diminutive of Aristotle be Ari?

MirandaGoshawk · 29/12/2013 22:39

Maybe it was Ari, but the OP never saw it written down & just assumed 'Arry?

I knew someone who constantly referred to her DD as Beffany. I longed to correct her, but who knows? Maybe it was Beffany on the birth cert!
