arghhhh I have just read a grammar book... I know, I know, I need to "get a life".

Anyhow - it says in there that to prevent confusion, it is perfectly acceptable to add in an apostrophe for clarity in a plural... as in "dotting the i's and crossing the t's " and indeed, when I google search, it appears to be the case... are there any other plurals where you habitually put an apostrophe s...

When I worked in publishing, our style guide had the same for "do's and don'ts". It always looked odd to me, so I never added an apostrophe.

I hate that. I'd put "dotting the 'i's and crossing the 't's." this shows you are referring to the letter rather than spelling a word with it. Bloody awkward to type on a phone though!

Two girls called Emily could be Emilys or even (for fun) Emilies but never Emily's.

My real name ends with an S (let's pretend it's James Grin ). I always write "James's" for something that belongs to me. I was taught this was just as correct as James'. But the sheer number of people who correct me is vair annoying. BOTH ARE CORRECT! Ran over.
