ooohh I'm excited!

just stumbled across this forum while having a nose about. It's just up my street! spelling and grammar were drilled into me by my DM from a very young age.
--she never cared about the content of my school work, as long as the spelling and grammar lived up to her standards.

going to have to keep my phone spell check on its best behaviour though Grin

some of my favourites.....

should of/should have
pacific/specific
definately/definitely
missing/unnecessary apostrophes

errors on shop POS - always asking for complaints IMO

It is not always easy typing on a 'phone - let's be more welcoming to Kafri! After all pedants and would-be pedants are in relatively short supply when compared with the population at large.

You know what really winds me up? People who say "pre-order" and "pre-book".
Is there any way of ordering or booking something other than before the event?

Thank you Cat, though it was shameful of me. My only excuse being I was lying in bed with my phone. Very lazy of me but I really couldn't be bothered creeping down the landing past the nursery and risking waking the little one. My dear mum would be turning in her grave at my lack of capital letters...

Well Phyllis i'd like to see someone try to book an event that's already happened. It's big in retail - they all want you to pre-order something prior to its release.

What's the difference between pre-order and order???

I also hate "pan-fried" and "oven- baked". How do you fry, if not in a pan, or bake without an oven! Eh? Eh?

Sorry and all that. The sentence going to have to keep my phone spell check on its best behaviour though had me wincing. It caused me real pain and suffering. Please don't do that again.

  1. Deep frying doesn't use a pan. Also, pan frying is a term separate to that of shallow frying and deep frying, even though a pan may be used for all three.
  1. You can bake on a bakestone, or in a tandoor (OK a tandoor is a type of oven, however it is different enough in Western cooker to be distinguished from a 'regular' oven.

Not necessarily, as per my subsequent correction - how many pans do you see in a fish and chip shop for deep fat frying?

My point stands that not all frying involves a pan, and pan frying is a specific term within the collective term of 'frying'.

I could shallow fry some eggs in a pan, but I wouldn't be pan frying them.

Anyway, not quite, because there is a distinction between pan frying and shallow frying, being the amount of oil used :

"Pan frying is a form of frying characterized by the use of minimal cooking oil or fat (compared to shallow frying or deep frying); typically using just enough oil to lubricate the pan (although, in the case of a greasy food such as bacon, no oil or fats may be needed)."

"Shallow frying is an oil-based cooking technique... Since the food is only partly submerged, it must be turned over partway through the cooking process."
