Marcus or Marcus's

I'm making a treasure box for a friend's DS. I can't decide if it should say Marcus' or Marcus's.

It is driving me loopy. I'm pretty sure they're both correct, but can't decide which looks better.

Why couldn't he just be Marc?

Help please oh wise MNers!

both correct. I prefer Marcus'

milkwasabadchoice · 24/04/2013 13:31

I think Marcus's is correct. But I need to know for certain too, as my own son has a similar name! Help!

Cooroo · 24/04/2013 13:33

Go with Marcus's, it's how you say it. What's the actual wording? Can you rework it so the possessive isn't needed?

willyoulistentome · 24/04/2013 13:34

Watchhing with huge interest as that's my sons name - and I never know either!!!!

PoppadomPreach · 24/04/2013 13:34

Watching with interest, I have a Douglas!

I was convinced Douglas' was correct, but I'm not entirely sure....

steppemum · 24/04/2013 13:35

If it was Mark, then Mark's would be correct. But if the word ends with an s then you can use either, and both are correct.

squeaver · 24/04/2013 13:35

Both are correct.

ItsYonliMe · 24/04/2013 13:36

As Steppemum and Squever have said, both are correct.

Bumpsadaisie · 24/04/2013 14:10

My son's name is Thomas. I always say Tom's. Grin

MERLYPUSS · 24/04/2013 14:19

Marcus'.
I have a Thomas and the famous London hospital is Saint Thomas' so I am going with that. Plus the fact he would say his name hasn't got two S in it.

Mehrida · 24/04/2013 15:10

I was pretty sure they were both correct, but you know when you start doubting yourself?

I just want to write:
Marcus'/Marcus's treasure box
Short of writing 'The treasure box of Marcus' I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to reword - suggestions welcome!

I think Marcus' looks tidier but I generally go with the 'how you would say it' rule, in which case it's be Marcus's.

Which does your friend prefer? Both are correct. I'd prefer Marcus's, but a friend's DS has a similar name and I know she has Marcus' room on a sign on his bedroom door. Does he have a convenient surname you could use as well, to sidestep the dilemma?

mum47 · 24/04/2013 16:28

My son's name ends in s. I much prefer s' to s's which although also correct, I feel seems wrong.

LeChatRouge · 24/04/2013 16:28

This
TREASURE BOX
belongs to
Marcus

Mehrida · 24/04/2013 16:31

That would be a good idea if his surname wasn't Smithers. Just kidding ;).

Good idea to check how his DM spells it, off to trawl back Facebook photos of him now to see if she's mentioned it.

I really am overthinking this now. I know I am, but I've committed to it now!

I like Lechat's solution too.

Mehrida · 01/05/2013 17:28

Well ladies you inspired me. I went for writing 'treasure in different colours round the outside of the wee label. Then I wrote Marcus in the middle. (And stuck sparkly dinosaurs round it, but that may not be relevant.)

Thanks all! :)
