Barbecue or barbeque?

Does it matter? I am editing something, and lots of references to, well, both. I lean towards barbecue, but have no idea why.

The earliest examples of the word seem to use the 'c'. That's looking it up online though. I shall look it up in my dad's (very) old Etymological dictionary which is currently buried under too much stuff to move (dh decorating), but for now I'd go with the ....cue.

'q' is ALWAYS wrong unless it's BBQ
'barbeque' would be pronounced 'barbek'

Well, that's all right then. I just had so many contributions that referred to barbeques, I was starting to doubt myself...
