So is it 'greatly received' or 'gratefully received'?

'Greatly received' seems very wrong to me, but I have googled [saddo] and can't find any mention of it being wrong. Is it some sort of Victorian throwback saying which is actually correct? (I do hope not.)

Gratefully received surely?

HouseOfBamboo · 20/05/2012 10:53

I think it should be gratefully received, but keep seeing 'greatly received' - on MN and elsewhere. Grr.

Well they are just wrong :o

vigglewiggle · 20/05/2012 10:55

Gratefully.

ShowOfHands · 20/05/2012 10:55

I have NEVER seen greatly received. Greatfully, yes. Greatly, no.

HouseOfBamboo · 20/05/2012 10:58

ShowOfHands - ah wait, you'll start to see it everywhere now... Wink

Gratefully received, as in one is grateful to receive it, when "it" = a gift of some kind
Greatly received - used in a completely different context - as in "his speech was greatly received by all who heard it" (although that sounds contrived anyway).

Different uses.

HouseOfBamboo · 20/05/2012 11:03

Thumbwitch - that makes sense, maybe that's where it has come from. I've seen lots of 'greatly received's' in the context of eg 'all advice greatly received'.

ahh, but that still doesn't necessarily make them right, HouseOf! Wink They might have meant gratefully, but you do see a lot of misspelling of grateful on here as well (as greatful), so who knows!

Trestle · 20/05/2012 21:27

received gratefully :)

Never seen that, it's definitely "Gratefully received". "Greatly received" seems like a combination of "gratefully received and "greatly appreciated" to me.
