i prefer dependent, using dependant to mean a person who you look after

You can have a dependent dependant but not a dependant dependant as far as I'm concerned.

What's the evidence for it being either/or? I'm happy to be educated.

On the software used at work, there is a field with the title Independant Reviewing Officer. Every time I fill it in, a little part of me dies.
