Hi, I was hoping one of you lovely Pedants could help me with my appauling spelling.

How do you spell "aaah" as in a scream?

I'm busy making a banner for our Halloween party, but I need to make sure it's the right spelling before I take ages making it.

Thanks. [hsmile]

AFAIK, there isn't one standard spelling, but 'aargh' would be recognisable and is widely used.

usualsuspect · 30/10/2011 13:34

I would use aaarrrrrggghhh!

But I'm not a pedant [hgrin]

chuffingalong · 30/10/2011 13:38

Thank you. That was a quick response! I'll use that one then. [hsmile]

You definitely need an 'r' in there, and a 'g'. I'd say the exact combination is up to the individual. And what you can fit on the banner?

Trills · 30/10/2011 13:40

Definitely with an RGH in there somewhere.

Aaaaah might be mistaken for the doctor says go aaah or aaaah what a cute kitten rather than aaaaah a zombie.

Oh! and another one. Thank you, I am known for my abstract spelling, so maybe. [hwink]

Argh! Or Aaaarrrrgghhhh! etc for a scream

Ahhhh, is for a doctor or something cute.

I say 'argh!' when I stand on DS's lego but 'ahhh' when I see the baby next door.

Trills · 30/10/2011 13:42

Given that it's a Halloween banner it'll probably be obvious what kind of aaaah you meant :o

HeadlessLamAAARRRGHHHH · 30/10/2011 13:47

Like what I've done...

RustyBear · 30/10/2011 14:09

Seeing that you've posted in Pedants' Corner, and that you have actually asked for help with your spelling, am I allowed to mention that it's 'appalling', not 'appauling'?

Grockle · 30/10/2011 15:11

And also, it really should be Hallowe'en

chuffingalong · 30/10/2011 21:14

Yes, thank you RusyBear. I'll try to remember that one, and the Hallowe'en. [hsmile] I told you it was shocking.
