We're not OR we aren't?

Is one correct and the other not?

We live overseas - dc are bilingual English/German but dd has to participate in the English lessons. The phrase in todays lesson was "they aren't new." I would have probably said "they're not new". Am I wrong?

But they're also pronouncing it ar-rent. Not right where I come from.

depends where you are from, Scotland and Northern England favour they're not, South and Mids England they aren't.....
