As in "lug-shur-y" -

Is there a reason for pronouncing it this way?

(stupid phone)

I should probably tell him it's wrong, diplomatically. It could be embarrassing for him at some point.

Apparently, sangwich is even more specific - Scottish catholic. I was at a talk once and a linguist explained the origin. I can't remember the explanation, though, but it rang true. It is only my catholic friends that pronounce it with a g.

Someone who said absol-yutely would also probably say lug-shury.

They wouldn't say sangwich, but they probably would say sand-widge (note deliberate and careful pronunciation of the "d")

Anyone else on this thread reminded of the family in the TV series Absolutely btw? I tried and failed to find it on Youtube. I'm sure the father committed all these crimes against pronunciation.

The very one! You can get it on [http://www.channel4.com/programmes/absolutely/4od 4oD]] but I couldn't find a video of just the clip (or should that be vi-day-oh as the good townspeople of Stoneybridge would say).
