Ah... The Oatmeal.. He helps me with my terrible grammar. There's a poster you can buy Grin

Wow, I now get semi colons.

However, the poster says don't use them with conjunctions and then in the final example he uses one with 'and'?

BitOfFun · 28/03/2011 21:30

That's because it's being used in a list as a kind of super-comma. The ordinary comma is being used to introduce sub-clauses (descriptions, in this case) to the the listed items, so a semi-colon needs to be used to separate the items in the list.

I'm terrible. I quite often use a hyphen/dash where a semi-colon should be used I think...

I love semicolons. They are very useful but I can't stand when people use them where they should have used a colon - that just makes me cross.

I have a very annoying habit of using the dash where I should use something more grammatically correct - but I find it helps the conversational flow make more sense. I don't use it in essays or formal writing, I just got used to using it when writing my diary and it's stuck.

That's ace. Love the pictures.

I want all those posters. I want to put them up on my DD's walls. I am trying to work out how much they will cost to ship over here...
