Pedants' corner

spelling in schools

Phew, I'm glad to discover pedants' corner actually exists. Maybe people here will share my horror at the spelling mistakes that have appeared from DS1's school. Last week there was a letter home which contained the clanger 'great full'! Then yesterday I was walking down the corridor and noticed a caption to a photo that said, 'Brownies making their promice.' DH doesn't get why it winds me up so much. He keeps going on about people having dyslexia who are very bright but just can't spell. I know that, but it's a school and both items were done on the computer so they could at least have spell-checked. It's like someone running their fingernails down a chalk board when I see this sort of stuff. I'm just glad DS can't read (he's in the nursery class and won't be going to this school, although I'm not sure others will be any better). Hopefully one of the children will point it out.
Part of me wants to complain to the school. Am I over-reacting?

I don't think you are. I'd be very tempted to say something.. Whether I would do it jokingly or as an enraged parent would depend on the day!!!

Same as Mamsnet! Ds school report was full of spelling mistakes, 17 to be precise! In one paragraph he was a girl and in another he was in a different class, I was gobsmacked!

Fair enough about dyslexia, but this is a school - they're supposed to teach children to spell!

Could the poster have been written by a pupil? That would be the only excuse IMO.

As for the letterhome, and Coffee's ds's report (Shock) - appalling!

I would also want to say something to theschool, but have no idea how.

BTW all schools are not like this.

Coffee, did you say anything about the report? I'm too much of a wimp.

Oh yes! :o
I went in and asked to speak to the head, told him I was disgusted that in this day and age no one had used spell checker, realised that my son was a boy not a girl or got the correct class.
He tried fobbing me off saying the teachers have an awful lot of reports to write, I said yes I agree however they use a template to type the reports up changing names, subjects etc as they go so there is no excuse for getting so much detail incorrect, and worse still the head has to sign the reports and comment and he'd not noticed anything wrong Shock
They ammended the spellings and other mistakes and printed me another copy!

Can you even be sure that they were reporting on your child?!

CoffeeGoneColdAgain · 06/03/2011 08:34

Good point PrettyCandles! I assume they were, he's quite a bright boy, and the mock sats result scores were the same as what he told me he'd got!
