Pedants' corner

AIBU to be very distressed that my new road DOES NOT have an apostrophe in either of the places it could be?

Family and friends just look mildy amused and give me a bit of a wry smile and a "there, there dear" kind of comment.

But, we could be living here for a while. I'm not going to out myself with the actual address, but I even checked with Royal Mail and there is no apostrophe. I have far bigger things to worry about, of course, which this is proving a welcome distraction to!!

I always put in an apostrophe when addressing a letter to St. 's School because it annoys me so much that the school doesn't use an apostrophe in its name on its own letter headings. There should be a full stop after an abbreviation too but the school doesn't bother with that either.

It does slightly annoy me when apostrophes are omitted from street names but I can live with it.

Did my ears deceive me or did Jeremy Paxman correct a politician in mid debate about A.V. the other night? The man said, 'less and less people', and Paxman cut in with, 'fewer and fewer people'. It was music to my ears.

I've also heard the no punctuation rule for street names. But it still annoys me that my parents dorad doesn't have an apostrophe where it shoudl do.

I add it in whenever I write to them Grin
