and has been doing it since she got here 10 days ago.

According to her she loves the CSI serious, the NCIS serious and was following the Edwardian Farm serious.

I'm not going to mention her pronounciation of mattress and vinyl .

I know someone who pronounces 'chameleon' as a 'sham - a - lon'

god knows what she would sound like if she sang the boy george song.

Eglu · 28/12/2010 14:38

Milngavie, I'm assuming you're Scottish and that you MIL is too. I think lots of Scottish people do this, although I have no idea why.

My PIL have this thing about saying More-gage, for mortgage. And my MIL pronounce next, nixt.

Mattress and vinyl - I want to know now.

Totoros - I actually laughed at that Grin

Milngavie · 28/12/2010 15:09

Eglu we are Scottish Grin.

Vinyl is said - vin-aisle

Mattress rhymes with address

Having said all this how many are pronouncing my name as Mill-n-gav-y?

I'm not Xmas Grin
I'm a smarty pants hehehe I know how to say it.

Eglu · 28/12/2010 15:15

I'm not, as I used to live in Glasgow.

Vin-aisle - that's just classic.

prism · 28/12/2010 15:29

Ahem. I have to step in here in defence of chemical pedantry and point out that vinyl actually is vin-aisle. Everyone who says vy-nil is in fact wrong. It's like butyl, ethyl, methyl etc, and it's called vinyl because of its structural similarity to alcohols (though I don't think it has any particular connection with wine other than the etymology).

I appreciate this is meta-pedantry but if I can't say it here where can I?

Milngavie · 28/12/2010 16:35

Lol, that's handy to know! I'll stick with vine-nil though as vin-aisle just sounds wrong Grin.

MIL told us a few years ago that she was going to the sales at MI5 because she wanted a new sofaGrin

Yulephemia · 28/12/2010 20:54

MI5 Grin
My MIL worries about getting "Alkheimer's". Hmm
I can never decide whether her Daily Fail-indoctrination means she's conflated Alzheimer's with Al-Qaida, or whether the medical part of her brain has conflated it with Alka-Seltzer. Grin

Oh and she pronounces gerbil with a hard /g/.
