Can you help answer a question about a word I can't even remember?

So now that I have found this wonderful place I can hopefully put to bed a conundrum that has troubled me for ages.

Trouble is, I can't remember what the word I struggle with - maybe you can help? [optimistic emoticon]

It's a word that can be written beginning with an 'a' or an 'e' and I am never sure which one to use. I did used to wonder if one was an American spelling but I have just googled 'American Spellings' and couldn't find it.

Oh this is hopeless. I am not sure how you can be expected to help me when I can't remember the flipping word but is this ringing any bells?

You can effect (verb) a change, which will affect (verb) others. The effect (noun) of which will be apparent if their affect (noun) is altered.

OK, so back to your original question. When you say "I can hopefully put to bed"- presumably you mean "full of hope, I can put to bed", not "I hope I can put to bed"...? Wouldn't want any misuse of adverbs here in P's C.
