-ways or -wise?

As heard on the BBC yesterday - 'he can't get a word in edgewise'.

Now I always thought it was -ways...

Can anyone confirm or deny either way?

Thank you!

Always heard/used edgeways.

Sounds like they got confused with clockwise.

Was it said on a regional programme?

If you say 'edgeways' in a Brummie accent it sounds like 'edgewise' Smile

No, it was on the Formula 1 grand prix coverage, and the guy speaking was Home Counties through and through! I'll put it down to an error then, the pedant in me wouldn't let it lie until I'd checked it out! Grin
