Shock Where have I got registry office from then?
cardibach · 19/09/2010 22:10

Surely it is the Office of the Registrar?

nocake · 24/09/2010 12:06

No, it's the Register Office as it's the office where births marriages and deaths are registered.

I've no idea why so many people call it a registry office.

LLKH · 27/09/2010 08:02

Might be an Americanism? If I remember correctly, and someone tell me if I'm wrong, in the US they are called registry offices. (But I haven't lived in the US for 6 years so . . .)

nocake · 07/10/2010 10:04

And now Mumsnet have fallen into the trap on their front page.

I googled Registry Office and some smart cookie at Google has spotted that people always make this mistake so it automatically searches for Register Office instead.

chegggersplayspop · 07/10/2010 10:07

I thought it was a registry office till I got married in a register office. Register office sounds wrong, even though it's right.

nickelbabe · 07/10/2010 14:26

OP - I know! That's one thing that bugs me, too.
So much so, that I thought I must have got it wrong! (especially cos my mum taught it)

scotsmuminengland · 12/10/2010 12:00

I googled where I got married and it came up with two websits. One with register office and one with registry office. I always call it registry office. Sounds better to me

Oh this annoys me too. Good call, OP.

IggitheImpaler · 13/10/2010 20:36

It's Registrar's office here. I know as had to keep checking before putting it onto wedding invitations Smile
