...not Registry Office. Why does everyone get it wrong?

Where have I got registry office from then?

Surely it is the Office of the Registrar?

No, it's the Register Office as it's the office where births marriages and deaths are registered.

I've no idea why so many people call it a registry office.

Might be an Americanism? If I remember correctly, and someone tell me if I'm wrong, in the US they are called registry offices. (But I haven't lived in the US for 6 years so . . .)

And now Mumsnet have fallen into the trap on their front page.

I googled Registry Office and some smart cookie at Google has spotted that people always make this mistake so it automatically searches for Register Office instead.

I thought it was a registry office till I got married in a register office. Register office sounds wrong, even though it's right.

OP - I know! That's one thing that bugs me, too.
So much so, that I thought I must have got it wrong! (especially cos my mum taught it)

I googled where I got married and it came up with two websits. One with register office and one with registry office. I always call it registry office. Sounds better to me

It's Registrar's office here. I know as had to keep checking before putting it onto wedding invitations
