Pedant's refuge: I have to get it out, but not on the threads themselves as I'll get ripped to shreds it's not polite. It's safe here.

Pier pressure

What gems have made your teeth itch in silent rage?

PIER PRESSURE?

oh dear dear dear

ILoveDolly · 30/07/2010 22:08

I just read 'high heals'

grin · 30/07/2010 22:08

alot
grrrrrrrrrrrr

grin · 30/07/2010 22:12

(Doesn't fit the pattern of wrong wordism I now see I hadn't followed, but gets me every time and I remain silent (mostly)...)

PigeonPie · 30/07/2010 22:12

here here

tethersend · 30/07/2010 22:36

Oh no grin, anything goes on this thread... let it all out.

Newsreaders:
STOP SAYING "SECUTERRY" (e.g. home secuterry)
now
Thank you

PrettyCandles · 30/07/2010 22:39

Would of.

PrettyCandles · 30/07/2010 22:41

The biscuit is how I feel about the teeth-itching gem, not about the thread.

tethersend · 30/07/2010 22:44

'Controversy' instead of 'Controversy'

OP posts:
tethersend · 30/07/2010 22:45

When italics don't work. I hate that.

OP posts:
EddieIzzardismyhero · 30/07/2010 22:47

Oh yes, "would of", "could of" etc.

Also "your" instead of "you're" and confusion over their/there/they're.

Usual stuff!

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/07/2010 22:50

someone emailed me today with practise. (instead of practice)

and advise. (instead of advice)

AgentProvocateur · 30/07/2010 23:15

More and more people here seem to think it's "persue" and "rediculous".

It makes my teeth itch.

Katisha · 30/07/2010 23:18

REE-search instead of reSEARCH

EddieIzzardismyhero · 31/07/2010 12:10

Random possessive apostrophes all over the place when the words being used are plurals and don't bloody need one!

BitOfFun · 31/07/2010 12:17

My dad (ultimate pedant) always taught me that controversy was correct in Britain.

hocuspontas · 31/07/2010 12:22

As someone who has used 'alot' a lot in the past I wonder why people make this error? Do you think we were taught it at some stage? It seems a random word to make up. Afew or abig or anice haven't surfaced so I am curious to know why alot is common!

BeenBeta · 31/07/2010 12:24

hear hear

Nemofish · 31/07/2010 12:28

Healf

Teef

and the number free

and more irritating but heard less often:

People being 'pacific' about things instead of specific

And saying acherly, actually that drives me fucking crazy.

Dsd does all of those and doesn't 'hear' what is wrong with them. Dh and I love her dearly but need valium some weekends to get through.

BalloonSlayer · 31/07/2010 12:31

On here it's

"Do you think we should go to see a councillor?" (Why? Have you a damp patch?)

"It didn't phase me at all."

waitingforbedtime · 31/07/2010 12:34

People who say/type 'I brought a coffee at the coffee shop'

definately

chaostrulyreigns · 31/07/2010 12:52

Have just been open-mouthed reading a post on a thread about wedding behaviour:

In essence, the Best Man thanked sew'n' sew in his speach.

sungirltan · 31/07/2010 13:00

'me to'

grrrrrrrrrrr

'i was lygat yeh' instead of 'so then i said...'

on facebook 'jo bloggs is well board'

waitingforbedtime · 31/07/2010 13:01
