This is my first post here and possibly my only one ever because I know my grammar is far from perfect and I make typos all the time. However, I want to vent!

I just read a thread where a poster repeatedly refers to the fact that she is due to start college in a few weeks time, but I can see from her posts that she doesn't know when to use their and when to use there. (I really hope she doesn't happen to see this post as I would hate to offend her!).

How can she not know the correct use of there and their? My six year old knows it! Also, what kind of college takes on students who have not mastered such basic English? Has higher education really been dumbed down this much?

I don't think Pedants' corner is here so we can flag up mistakes by other MNers just to make ourselves feel superior.

ok. Sorry (I mean it). I thought it was a safe - almost empty place - where I could vent without offending anyone. I don't mean to get at the other MNer (I didn't identify her or say what her posts were about). It is simply that her posts jarred as I read then (that was all), but I am not here for a fight. So I do apologise for misusing the area and I'll leave you all now to get back on with what you usually talk about.
