'To bold a word'

This has been bugging me for months.

I mean the MN instruction to the right of this or any other page that says 'to bold a word', put * fore and aft.

NO. Not 'to bold'. It should read 'to embolden'.

I absolutely agree. 'To embolden' it should be. Let's start a campaign. (Psst - I would accept 'to make bold' but let's go all out for the better option!)

But I still don't seem to be able to embolden, even with the asterisks,

Except that this time it worked! But WHY?

To bold a word , that's made me chuckle. Sounds like a year 7 student.
