Googling local beauty salons and have been put off one describing itself as a 'ladie's and gents salon'. WTF? An old chestnut, I know, but it riled me.

Apart from anything else, it's the inconsistency that gets to me with this sort of thing - if the person who wrote it had sat down and tried to work it out, they surely would have gone for gent's to match, the fact that there's one apostrophe but not two indicates they just have no idea what an apostrophe is for and decided to throw one in just incase!

It's the inconsistency that irritates me, too. Not quite as bad as gent,s though (yes, I saw this elsewhere).
Off to get a life ...

Next time you pass by, ask them why they didn't insert one in "gents".

When they say it doesn't need one, ask them why they feel "ladies" needed one.
