Hi,

I'm planning to make a birthday cake in the shape of a number 1 for DS's birthday at the end of July.

I have got 2 cake decorating books which both have number 1 cakes in them - both advise using a rectangular cake tin with the dimensions 8cm x 26cm (they advise baking 2 cakes of this size, one to use as the main vertical bit of the 1 and the rest to cut up and use for the top and bottom).

Have hunted high and low on Google for a cake tin of those dimensions - no luck. Any ideas where I could get one?

Alternatively could I bake a square cake (say 25cm x 25cm) and just cut bits out of it to make the 1? Would that work or mightn't it fall apart??

Thanks in advance.

Can you not use a 26cm x 26cm tin and just cut 2 8cm wide strips or you could just hire a 1 shaped tin from a local cake shop.

I did a 2 for dd by baking an big oblong cake 8"x11" ie about A4 and just cutting the shape out - dead easy
here it is

oh and it doesn't fall apart so long as you don;t move it once cut, iyswim.

i made a huge rectangular one in a deep baking tray for mine and just cut the number one out of it and then cut the leftovers into small squares and iced them

re cutting leftovers into squares and icing them
mine mysteriously disappeared (om nom nom)

Thanks for the advice, I think I will either just bake a large 26cm x 26cm cake or see if I can hire a number 1 shaped tin.

By the way I am most impressed with the number 2 MrsB! If my cake turns out half as good I'll be very pleased
