'cool' fancy dress ideas for 12 year old boy please!

Son has been invited to big party at the end of term, its fancy dress (no theme) any ideas of anything he can go as? we are really struggling and don't want him to go looking 'uncool' as he will just be finishing the first year of senior school with lots of new friends - all the things I have suggested have been dismissed straight away!

I expect there'll be a few Harry Potters.
Somebody sporty - footballer, rugby player etc.
A beach bum - beachwear and surfboard.
Thingybob the vampire from Twilight.

Blues Brothers or Men in Black.
Or the guy from The Matrix.

If you do the Heath Ledger version it doesn't matter if the makeup is a bit ropey.

My ds (12) always goes as this, no matter how much I try to persuade him to go as something else. He's known for it!

All of those are subtle in-the-background fancy dress. I am more used to boys going dressed as schoolgirls or Ziggy Stardust, or Frodo.
