Christening cake ideas

I'd like to make a cake for a little party we're having after DS is christened.

I've basically decided to make a chocolate sponge, it's easy but I'm totally struggling on how to decorate it. I'm not particularly talented (understatement ) but would like to produce something that I don't have to hide under a tea cloth.

Can anyone give me some ideas/tips please?

Is a stiff buttercream icing the way to go? The end result seems to be what I want, but not sure how to make it or how easy it is to get the smooth finish?
