present for school friend

I'm going to a surprise birthday party for my school friend who will be 40. I haven't seen her for about 12 years although we still exchange christmas cards. I have no idea what to buy her and I would love some suggestions. Not sure how much to spend either.

Is there anything memorable that you did together at school? A day when something silly happened that you've always remembered? I reckon you should go for something meaningful rather than something that you don't even know that she would appreciate.

What is your budget?
I recently bought a friend an Italian cookbook and some ingredients to go with it. It was popular gift, but then I knew she would like it.
