Just seen this post. Last year DD got this for her 3rd birthday:
www.amazon.co.uk/Crayola-Portable-Boombox-Activity-Centre/dp/B000IZ6Y34

It might be too 'kiddie' for you, but it is very durable and works well - had no probs with it so far and DD has always operated it herself.

dd1 has a Hello Kitty mp3 player and light up fluffy speaker. They come in all colours, although dd1 has the pink one and white speakers.

I got the mp3 player off ebay and she was given the speaker by a family member, but they are on ebay too.

I find mp3 players are less breakable. Juts load the cds onto the pc and then onto the mp3 player. Dd1 can do this herself. It also means that cds are not bing taken out of boxes and ending up here there are everywhere all the time.

dd has the one on this page that is pink. She;s not a girly girly type, and in real life it is a light pink, quite stylish. good sound too, and I can steal it for the radio!!!
