appropriate gift for 3year old?

ds is invited to his first birthday party and is very excited.

I am new to the party business and have no clue what is an appropriate gift for the birthday child.

a book? a toy? what sort of range moneywise?

We got the last few 3/4 year olds a chef's set from home sense, they loved it.

play-dough?

thanks for the suggestions will go shopping tomorrow. no play dough though due to allergy issues...

and another question: if you give a book, do you give the receipt to the mother, in case they need to return/exchange it?
