Do you think 2-4 yr olds would be ok with cocktail sticks

I want to do cheese and pineapple on sticks for DD's party as I always thought this was great at parties when I was little. But not sure whether cocktail sticks and toddlers would be a good idea.

I've certainly used them with that age group , after all you will be surpervising . Once had some sword shaped plastic ones for ds' 5th b'day (pirate theme) which went down a treat , unitl they had to be taken away when the boys starting fighting with them !

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 12/01/2010 08:49

4 yr olds - yes
2 yr olds - no.

jumpyjan · 12/01/2010 13:26

Hmm bit torn after these responses. Most of the children will be 3/4 but there a couple of younger children.

2 - no, 4 - yes in normal circumstances, however they tend to be wild and silly at parties, so tbh I would scrap the idea!

Hulababy · 12/01/2010 13:33

Can you file or cut the sharp end off?

My DD would have been fine at these ages, and would have been being supervised anyway.

pcworld · 13/01/2010 09:26

I would give the cocktail sticks a definite miss. Cheese & pineapple is a great idea - for peace of mind, perhaps just stick the cubes on a plate to hand round.

JackBauer · 13/01/2010 09:37

No. MIL always does cocktail sticks and we only have 2,3, 5 and 9 year olds and someone always gets stabbed.
In normal situations yes, but not at a party where you can't supervise them all. Use a cut up straw instead.

jumpyjan · 13/01/2010 10:40

Using a cut up straw is a great idea - have been trying to think of another alternative so will def do that. I love cheese and pineapple

no, I think it's an appalling idea. There will always be one not-too-sensible child who will want to play "pop the bum"

coldtits · 13/01/2010 10:50

I wouldn't have given ds1 a cocktail stick until he was 6.

EWWW think of the EYES!

snowylass · 13/01/2010 10:54

My 4 year old DS - yes OK
My 2 year old DD - yes OK

When my 4 year old DS was 2 - OMG no way!! He would have been a nightmare. Don't do it. Children vary so much. Just because your DD is OK with it, don't assume other kids are. In fact, my DS would probably have tried to eat the stick quite apart from anything else!

3littlefrogs · 13/01/2010 10:55

NO

NoahAndTheWhale · 13/01/2010 10:56

I'd say not. DD is 4 and DS is 6 and I'm not sure if they have had cocktail sticks at all yet.

PotPourri · 13/01/2010 10:57

I think ok, but on ly if you are able to watch them. If you are not sure, then but the sharp ends off

MrsSantosloves2010 · 13/01/2010 11:03

Definite no-no for my kids (2 and 4) and quite a few of their friends. Kids get silly at birthday parties, it's their job. cocktail sticks are vicious little buggers. What about those thin straws which you could cut up (or you could just do cubes of cheese and cubes of pineapple)

JackBauer · 13/01/2010 13:41

Straws are great for it. I do fruit kebabs on straws and stick the straws in some watered down juice so they can either eat or drink.
Keeps them amused for about 5 minutes!
