Science Boffins / Mad Science / Science Wizard Parties - Any good?

Hi, I am trying to organise a party for my 8yr old DS and think he would enjoy a science party, but am wondering about the mess element - exploding coke bottles and hovercrafts all seem to require outdoor space, which is hard to get hold of round here (our garden is tiny and halls don't have much safe space) AND potentially freezing in early Feb.

Has anyone had such a party?

Was it possible indoors in Feb?

Many thanks in advance

WE did this for my dd's birthday and it was fab. As soon as the 'boffin' left all the adults rushed to try out the trcks.

Most of it took place in our living room (and this was in summer) as the 'boffin' needed the kids to sit down and watch/listen. All the kids were entranced and sat perfectly with arms in air to get picked to do a trick. They only went outside once to do a trick.

At the end they gave out certificates that said the kids were boffins. When they were leaving this was more prized than the party bags!

Go for it.

You can do it yourself, without paying for the party planners too.

Katz's ran one herself for her DD's borthday party a year or so ago. She produced a booklet of the experiemnts. I helped out. I went really well and the childrn enjoyed it a lot.

I have since done some of the stuff at the school i work at, and it has been fine - I have no science backgrund at all.

Katz's DDs party was indoors and all the experiemnts indoors were fine and enjoyed. The coke bottle was the last experiment and they went outdoor for that.

if you email me on [email protected] i'll send you all my info - i must have sent this out to 50 odd mumsnetters since doing it well over a year ago!

I have also recycled some of the experiments and done a half day during science week at DD1's school and will be again this year, although i hope to do both Y2 classes if i can.
