Parents 40th wedding anniversary - ideas please

my mum and dad will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in March. We have looked at a number of options but nothing seems to be working out

they don't want a huge party, we have also thought of a family trip to amsterdam which doesn't seem to be happening (as there are about 12 of us minimum) and we looked at horse racing but that doesn't seem to begin till April.

please can you tell me of your 40th anniversary triumphs!

My parents 40th is in April they have booked a national trust holiday home for us all to go to. (we stayed at the same place for my mums 60th a few years ago) Not sure who they have invited but there will be 13 minimum.

A nice meal out. Have heard of some wonderful celebrations people have had on steam trains and canal boats for something a bit different. Otherwise a restaurant with a private room. VIP theatre tickets where you have a meal beforehand and the dessert in the interval.

ok, they have booked a party so now I'm on to gift ideas. Can anyone tell me speical things you've got / given / done as gifts?
