Engagement gift

A very good friend has recently got engaged. I have no idea how much to spend on a present. What would you spend on someone you have known for over 10 years?

I've never bought anyone an engagement present. I've always felt that I'll buy them something nice when they get married, so an engagement present was unecessary. If you're going to see them, perhaps take a card, a bunch of flowers and a nice bottle of wine/bubbly to share together and celebrate?

if they are having an engagement party I'd take a bottle of champagne
if not a card will do

I agree with HeadFairy, an engagement gift is a not necessary. Why spend on two smallist gifts when you can get them a nicer bigger gift for the wedding?
