4th Birthday Party Bag Ideas Please!

My daughter is having a 4th birthday party soon and has about 20 pre-school friends coming. All this is new to me and I would be really gratful if you could let me know what is expected in a 'party bag' and what if anything I should avoid!

Party bags vary hugely, and you won't please everyone. Most children expect something to take home, but they don't seem bothered what it is.

Many parents find the 'multiple pieces of small plastic crap' a bit annoying because you get so much of it.

I like the parties where you get one thing - a helium balloon, or a colouring book, or whatever, along with a piece of birthday cake.

At DS's 4th Birthday Party, the girls were given a helium balloon, a piece of cake, a fairy wand and a mini water pistol.

I have just done some very cheap ones for my ds' nursery class (as we aren't having a party and that seems to be the expected thing!). I gave them a pencil with a novelty rubber on the end, a mini game (blow through the straw and try and keep the ball up in the air thing), a bouncy ball, an animal balloon, a mini packet of haribos, a mini packet of smarties and a bottle of bubbles. I got them all drastically reduced and ended up spending less than £1 per bag.

Book People (even at 4)- buy the sets and break them up with a treat size sweet - like the fairy wand idea too....

We've given up on goodie bags now they're older, but liked to give 1 decent thing costing £1 max. Usually get things in the sale or on ebay.

Have done bookmarks,purses/wallets, lipsticks, pencil tins, kiddy-themed socks and flannels, Book people books. Dh says my goody bags are famously boring, but at least it's not junk to go in the bin. If I couldn't get enough of one thing to do them all the same, did lucky dip on way out.
