50th birthday present

Hi all, it's my first post in here. My DD (19) wants some advice on what to buy her dad for his 50th (and I am all out of ideas!)

So,over to her:

Hey everyone!
I need some suggestions on a good 50th present for my dad. I always seem to buy him a tie or a CD, and he never has any good suggestions...he will ALWAYS say socks. No dad, no. I feel terrible anyway because I am going to Berlin over his birthday with my uni course and although he says he doesn't mind at all I feel really cruel that I won't be there for his birthday.

So yes. Heartfelt (but not expensive!) present ideas would be much appreciated. I want my dad to know that I think he is the kindest most lovely dad I could ever ask for....

Things he is into (he is a geek)
electrical things.Oh yes.
Steam trains?!
DIY
Theatre- but the technical side of things

He also likes to pretend he is cool and likes the Killers, Elbow and Adele, but I believe this to be all lies!

Thanks!

your daughter sounds lovely

i got my dad a really nice bottle of whiskey for his birthday

and suprised him by turning up on a holiday he thought i couldnt make!

how much does she want to spend?

needanap · 20/11/2008 16:08

I think she wants to spend about £20, but could always share with her brother, making it £40 ish! I don't think she has a lot of money, have reason to believe she has spent most of her student loan.

digital radio
you can get a good one for £40

You could take a load of old photos of you and your Dad since you were a baby and have a book/collage made at Snappy Snaps. Or just choose one lovely picture, put it in a frame and write on the back "I want my dad to know that I think he is the kindest most lovely dad I could ever ask for...."

Digital radio is a good idea! As is the whiskey, he is quite partial to it (or maybe I am...)

DD emailed me a reply:

Thanks for all the suggestions, they were great! Will probably do either Digital radio or photo frame. Especially lied squiffyhock's idea but think he might think I'm trying to get more money out of him. Jokes! Anyway thanks so much!
