dilema of my DD's 1st birthday.. to party or not to party?

Hi,
my lovely DDs birthady is coming up soon. does anyone have any ideas or tips on what we could do to celebrate? i feel i do want to mark the occassion, and for her to be a little bit spolied, but is it just peer pressure and she'll not know if she does not have a do? i really don't want a party or similar at our house, so where/how could we do something, if anything? what have anyone else done for 1st Bdays?

I didn't do anything party wise for DD1 till she was 3 as she was too young to remember

we still had presents and a cake with a candle to blow out though and a photo so she knows later it was celebrated
