Retracting an invitation????

I'm not sure exactly where this post should go, maybe there should be an "Ask a Mumsnetter" section.

Anyway a couple of weeks ago ds asked if he could have a little nursery friend over to tea. So I spoke to the Mum last week and although we didn't make final arrangements agreed that this Thursday would be a good day, would fit in with dd's after school club and they finish school on Friday so it can't really be arranged

Meanwhile my Mum informed me that this Thursday after school my brother was having a 1st birthday party for my nephew and we were all invited.

Thursday is also Prize Day at school for dd and little friend's big sister and I know know that the after school club is cancelled.

So is it being really awful going back on the invite to tea or should I say no to the birthday part and risk offending my brother, sil and the rest of my family. I'm fairly good friends with little friend's mum but if she has already told him about the invite he will be disapointed.

Do it in the holidays?

You arent retracting the invitation though are you - just wanting to rearrange it? I'm sure she'd understand.

Explain that a family birthday party has been organised at very short notice and left you in an awkward position. Ask if she would be able to swap it to another day, or Thursday next week instead.

Failing that bring the friend to the birthday too?
