Third Birthday Party - what do we actually need?

I am planning my son’s third birthday party and would really like some tips from the MN pot of wisdom!

We are hiring a local community centre and expecting maybe 15 kids and parents.

I’m thinking of a bouncy castle as I know there’s space and other families have done this at the same venue.

But what else? Am I doing party games? Are there any you have tried which have been winners? What about top food suggestions or party bags? And anything you did which was a waste of money and I should avoid?

This is brand new territory to me so any help much appreciated!

I’ve found that parties with an entertainer work far better than bouncy‑castle style parties, as the kids stay engaged for the whole time. Balloons are always a huge hit — especially the helium ones. We had a party recently and kept the food really simple with garlic bread, pizza, crisps, cucumber, brownies and grapes. It only cost £50 and we didn’t have a single bit left. Whenever I put out too much healthy food, it just ends up in the bin.

I am also a fan of an entertainer but children’s attention spans aren’t always ready for it at 3. So if you do this then look for one with experience of toddler parties. Although the cost can feel high they usually bring all entertainment, props, prizes etc so you don’t need anything else.

A bouncy castle is another good option age 3 but you will need other activities too. No child can bounce for 2 hours. Think about simple craft activities or toys from home you can take. Or plan some party games yourself. Pass the parcel always kills some time and gets everyone sitting down. Wrap in tissue paper for little ones or just pass when a soft toy and give a sticker and sweets when it lands on them.

Food either a small buffet or a box of crowd pleasers. Or if allergies permit you could do a hot meal like cheese and tomato pasta for a small group like that. They’ll eat less than you expect.
