Hi all

My SEN son is turning 13 in May and hes found out his teachers birthday is on the same day as his (so excited to have a birthday twin). He would like to get her a card and a box of chocolates. Do you think this is inappropriate?

Of course it’s not - it’s a lovely thought. In our school the teachers always receive gifts on their birthdays. Always something from the whole class but also small individual gifts sometimes

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 18/03/2026 07:41

I would say that is fine

Poorabbeywalsh2 · 18/03/2026 07:42

Under the circumstances I don't think so, it's sweet.

It should be ok. But how has he found out when her birthday is? If it’s from stalking her online presence or similar, that’s not good. If it came up in class conversation, or he heard another teacher wishing her a Happy Birthday last year then go ahead.

I don't think the card and small gift are inappropriate but I really don't like the phrase "my SEN son"!

No that’s a lovely thing for him to do

Owly11 · 18/03/2026 07:54

I would say no, it isn't appropriate. Best to stick to social norms such as a small gift at the end of the year along with everyone else.

The teacher noticed it on the register and said that they were birthday twins.

Oh well. He is in a specialist school. I didnt know whether mentioning that would make any difference.

😅 Should be fine, then!

I thought you were going to say he wants to invite her to his party!
A little gift is a lovely idea and I’m sure she’ll be really pleased with it.
